In, on, at : quelle préposition choisir en anglais ?
In, on ou at ?
In, on, at pour le temps
| Préposition | Emploi | Exemples |
|---|---|---|
| at | heures, moments précis, fêtes (la période) | at 7 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at lunchtime, at Christmas, at Easter, at the moment, at the end of the day |
| on | jours, dates, jour de fête précis | on Monday, on Mondays, on 3 May, on my birthday, on Christmas Day, on Friday evening |
| in | parties de la journée, mois, saisons, années, siècles | in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in June, in (the) summer, in 1998, in the 21st century |
- The film starts at 8.30. Le film commence à 20 h 30.
- I play tennis on Saturdays. Je joue au tennis le samedi.
- We met in 2019, in the summer. Nous nous sommes rencontrés en 2019, l'été.
- I always read in the evening, but on Sunday evening I watch a film.
Et on dit at night (la nuit, en général), pas in the night, sauf pour parler d'un moment pendant une nuit précise (I woke up in the night, surtout britannique).
Pas de préposition du tout
Devant next, last, this, every, et avec today, tomorrow, yesterday, tonight, on ne met aucune préposition. C'est une faute très fréquente.
- See you next week. À la semaine prochaine. (pas on next week)
- I went to Rome last summer.
- She goes running every morning.

In, on, at pour le lieu
| Préposition | Emploi | Exemples |
|---|---|---|
| at | un point, un lieu vu comme un endroit où l'on fait quelque chose, une adresse avec numéro | at home, at work, at school, at the station, at the bus stop, at the door, at a party, at the doctor's, at 10 Baker Street |
| on | une surface, une ligne, les transports en commun, les médias, les étages | on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the bus, on the train, on a plane, on a bike, on the second floor, on page 12, on TV, on the radio, on the internet, on the left |
| in | un espace fermé, une ville, un pays, une région | in the kitchen, in a box, in the car, in a taxi, in London, in France, in the garden, in bed, in the picture |
- I'm at the station, where are you? Je suis à la gare, tu es où ?
- My keys are on the kitchen table.
- She lives in a small flat in Lyon.
- I met him on the train.
Voiture et taxi : on y est assis, enfermé, c'est in (in the car). Et pour le moyen de transport en général, on dit by sans article : by bus, by car, by train, mais on foot (à pied).
Les différences entre anglais britannique et américain
- in the street (GB) et on the street (US) : dans la rue.
- in Oxford Street ou on Oxford Street (GB), on Fifth Avenue (US) : avec un nom de rue, on est toujours possible.
- in hospital (GB) et in the hospital (US) : à l'hôpital, comme patient.
- at the weekend (GB) et on the weekend (US).
Pour indiquer un chemin (turn left, it's on your right), la page la ville et les directions complète celle-ci.
Les erreurs typiques des Français
| Faux | Correct | Pourquoi |
|---|---|---|
| I live at Paris. | I live in Paris. | Ville ou pays : in. |
| I'm in the bus. | I'm on the bus. | Transport en commun : on. |
| I'll see you on next Monday. | I'll see you next Monday. | Pas de préposition devant next. |
| I was born in 12 May. | I was born on 12 May. | Date précise : on. |
| I stayed at the home. | I stayed at home. | at home sans article. |
| We arrived to London. | We arrived in London. | arrive in + ville, arrive at + lieu précis, jamais arrive to. |
| I go to school by foot. | I go to school on foot. | Expression figée. |
Le verbe arrive ne se construit jamais avec to : arrive in Spain, arrive at the airport.
